I'm going to go over an in-depth analysis into the state of Iowa's residencies and my premise is that you can learn a lot from a residency by the alma maters of its residencies. While there is an expectation for meritocracy and opportunity for all, there is a huge difference between college admissions where you are looking to study somewhere and earning a job placement, a residency.
Iowa, like many other states, has over half of its residents coming from schools within the state, but when you look at the individual residencies you'll see a few different mixtures. Still, residencies often want their residents to stay on and if you're from Iowa or the Midwest, that's much more likely that you'll take a post residency graduation position there.
Here are those mixes:
When you look at the rankings of the schools that the students come into these residencies, to earn a placement, you really needed to be in the top 1/3 of the country in match rate for most, but as an out-of-stater at some sites, you needed to be top 20 in the country like Michigan (14), Minnesota(20), UMKC (11), or MCW (6) to earn that placement.
I got the rankings from my book: https://www.amazon.com/Pharmacy-School-Rankings-Residency-Applications-ebook/dp/B0BCWT6VFB/
